News: Belfast Community Greenway and Flood Alleviation Scheme

The Connswater Community Greenway is a proposal for an inspirational living landmark in East Belfast, creating a green corridor alongside the Connswater, Knock and Loop rivers, from the Castlereagh Hills to Belfast Lough, providing a network of open spaces and a continuous, uninterrupted pathway.  Once complete this £20 million project will make it possible for residents and visitors to walk, run or cycle between the hills and Lough.

The greenway and associated East Belfast Flood Alleviation Scheme will provide;

  • cleaner rivers
  • new bridges
  • 19kms of cycle and walkways
  • improved and connected green and open spaces
  • a public square
  • heritage trails
  • 9km linear park through East Belfast
  • increased river capacity, attenuation and flood protection.

The Greenway will connect people and places along the way, whilst rengerating and revitailising the area, making east Belfast a better place for people to live, work, visit and invest.

The East Belfast Flood Alleviation Scheme (EBFAS) works focus on the protection of areas currently subject to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall events.  River capacity will be increased through the enlargement of channel section and the provision of larger capacity culverts.
