About the project

Technical Block E (TBE) is a 5-bay hangar facility located on the British Airways (BA) West Operations Base and was constructed in the early 1950’s.

The main hangar doors for bays 2 and 3 are the original folding doors and are now more than 65 years old. These doors are located on the western side of the hangar and are subject to the prevailing south westerly winds and weather. Each door is approximately 50m wide by 9m high.

The profile doors incorporate a circular cut out so they can be closed around the fuselage of aircraft, which are too long to fit in the hangar bay.

The existing profile doors no longer fit the current fleet mix and a condition survey of both sets of doors recommended that the main hangar doors should be refurbished, and the profile doors be replaced with new to fit the current fleet mix, to restore door to a safe, compliant and reliable operation and to create a hangar bay environment that is suitable for maintenance, repair and overhaul operations.

In conjunction with Arup, we provided Project Management services for this multi-million-pound project.

The works included the following:

  • Removal and replacement of existing power supplies
  • Removal of existing door controls and replacement
  • Removal and provide new safety and warning devices
  • Replacement of bottom rails
  • Provide new power supplies
  • Refurbishment of existing main hangar doors
  • Replacement of existing profile door
