About the project
ChandlerKBS was commissioned to carry out the cost management, contract advice and procurement for this £7.2 million project to resurface the existing 07-25 runway including the following scope of works:
- New build construction of the fire access road and associated drainage.
- New build construction of the rapid speed exit fillet and associated drainage.
- Replacement of the existing PFC runway with HDM-base course and grooved Marshall Asphalt surface course.
- Replacement of aeronautical ground lighting (AGL).
The work was undertaken within a live operational airport during short nighttime sessions. The project was completed within budget and within the revised programme.
During the construction phase Belfast International Airport was designated to facilitate the arrival of the heads of state and officials visiting the G8 summit in Northern Ireland so the programme had to be accelerated to ensure the works were completed ahead of the visit. This posed a tremendous challenge as the design constraint for the grooving operations for the marshal asphalt lagged behind the laying operations.
ChandlerKBS worked on behalf of the Project Manager to agree an accelerated programme with the Contractor that suited the operational commitments of the Client and agreed the value of the change at no additional cost.
