About the project

This project extended the runway at either end to ensure the Isle of Man Ronaldsway Airport aerodrome was compliant with the UK Runway End Safety Area (RESA) legislation to meet the recommendation of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and compliance with CAP168.

The works comprised the construction of a seaward rubble promontory utilising imported Scandinavian rock armour of up to 40 tonnes to create the seaward perimeter on top of 325,000m3 of locally sourced core material.

Once an enclosure was formed approximately 1,000,000 tonnes of sea dredged sand from Morecombe Bay was placed to found the construction of the 250m extension of the existing runway and taxiways into the Irish Sea.

Other works included:

  • - Pavement strengthening.
  • - New western taxiway.
  • - New runway extension.
  • - Refurbishment of the existing taxiways.
  • - Resurfacing and re-profiling of the existing runway with Betons Bitumineux Aeronautiques.
  • - 9km of new airfield drainage.
  • - Upgrade of Air Ground Light, duct infrastructure and controls to the airfield.
