About the Project

The Dŵr Cyrmu Welsh Water sludge strategy for AMP5 saw a shift from energy intensive thermal drying and lime stabilization to Advanced Digestion, with 75% of its sludge production being processed across four key sludge treatment centres. The strategy identified two new plants at Cardiff and Afan based upon a Cambi thermal hydrolysis plant and new digesters.

The whole life cost of using the existing assets against the proposed advanced digestion plants clearly demonstrated this investment was cost effective on a spend-to-save basis and delivered significant economic benefit and lower service costs to Dŵr Cyrmu Welsh Water customers. Other benefits included CO2 reductions, reduced odour and transport nuisance, and reduced health and safety risks for operators through the retirement of existing sludge dryers.

ChandlerKBS provided both pre-contract and post-contract project management services for this scheme.
