About the project

The Connswater Community Greenway is a visionary urban regeneration project which has transformed East Belfast by combining improved flood protection with the creation of public spaces and pedestrian/cycle routes. Comprising a linear park, footways, cycle paths, new bridge structures and crossings, it follows the course of the Connswater, Knock and Loop Rivers, connecting open and green spaces from the Castlereagh Hills to Belfast Lough.

The greenway and associated East Belfast Flood Alleviation Scheme provides;

  • Cleaner rivers
  • New bridges
  • 16km of cycle and walkways
  • Improved and connected green and open spaces
  • A public square
  • Heritage trails
  • 19km linear park
  • Increased river capacity, attenuation and flood protection
