About the project

Constructed in the 1960s, the existing Prioress Mill Raw Water Pumping Station, situated in South East Wales, is a key pumping station for provision of treated water to Monmouthshire, Newport and Cardiff.

Dŵr Cyrmu Welsh Water identified the pumping station as a high-risk asset due to operational issues associated with existing equipment nearing the end of serviceable life.

The station was unable to comply with the changing requirements demanded of the site, which were intended to reduce its impact on the local water source. As a result, construction began on demolishing and replacing the existing station with a new pumping station.

A new 380ML/D raw water pumping station with six vertical turbine pumps, complete with seven new hydroloxvertical travelling belt screens was constructed.

Commissioning was successfully completed in 2022 with formal opening by Dŵr Cyrmu Welsh Water and local MPs taking place in 2023.
