About the project

Tynywaun Water Treatment Works forms part of the South East Wales Conjunctive Use System chain of water treatment works that supply the central South Wales valleys, Newport and Cardiff.

The scope of works included construction of a new 12 ML/D Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF), refurbishment of existing deteriorating Rapid Gravity Filters (RGF), and replacement of existing chemical dosing plants. Additionally, a new rinse tank was required as well as automation upgrade works and a dedicated Run to Waste (RTW) facility.

The incorporation of an RTW into the works was beneficial as this allows the DAF and first stage filters to be flushed out and returned to service more quickly. Water from the RTW is then returned to the raw water reservoir.
