About the project

The A4233 is the only main road through the Rhondda Fach Valley in South Wales, so the aim of this scheme was to provide environmental and safety benefits by removing traffic from a densely populated residential and commercial area.

The road comprises 8km of new and improved carriageway, a 90m span Bowstring Rheola bridge in Porth town centre, 10 bridges, 15 retaining walls and 16 culverted watercourses.  Works were often carried out within 10m of the Rhondda Fach river.

The Porth Relief Road scheme was awarded a number of national Constructing Excellence Awards including the ‘Best of the Best Award’ in recognition of its excellent promotion of the Constructing Excellence principles.
