About the project

Cardiff Central Station is Wales’ busiest railway station and is one of the 28 stations classed as category A, “National Hub” by the Department for Transport (DfT).

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the station routinely experienced significant overcrowding, and with passenger demand increasing, this issue is expected to re-emerge in the near future. Moreover, substantial further passenger growth is expected in the next decade and beyond. The pressure is likely to further increase on the station’s limited capacity. Urgent upgrades are therefore needed to make the station fit for anticipated future growth. Proposals are being developed for the expansion of the station’s capacity, which aims to ensure that this growth can be accommodated, as well as qualitative improvements to the station to improve passenger experience and encourage further increases in rail usage, and improve interchange interfaces to other transport modes.

The project is being funded by the Department for Transport, Cardiff Capital Region and Welsh Government.
