About the project

ChanlderKBS is commissioned to provide programme and project management services for a tram route to connect the existing Cardiff Bay line to Cardiff Central Station and a new extension to Pierhead Street.

Cardiff Crossrail is a proposal set out in the 2019 Transport White Paper 1 by Cardiff Council. The line will use a combination of existing and new rail routes to form a new east-west rail connection through Cardiff and beyond, whilst providing improved connections between the City Centre and Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Council has been successful in acquiring UK Levelling Up Funding and Welsh Government matched funding to deliver Phase 1 of  Cardiff Crossrail. Cardiff Council will be the lead client, recipient and administrator of both the funding and the programme and will be the Business Case owner. Workstreams and projects will be designed and delivered by Cardiff Council, Transport for Wales (TfW) and third-party developers.

Phase 1 will deliver an assumed service on opening of 4 trains per hour (tph) in each direction and enable a future service pattern of 6 tph in each direction.

The infrastructure to achieve this service may include:

  • Two new light-rail platforms at Cardiff Central with provision for future through-running services to the northwest
  • A new tram-train line across Callaghan Square
  • Reconfiguration of highways in and around Callaghan Square and Active Travel connections and public realm improvements
  • Connection to the heavy-rail network on the existing Cardiff Bay Line
  • One new platform at Cardiff Bay station with associated track work to enable two platforms to provide through-running services to southern extensions.
