About the project
The Cullybackey Level Crossing Upgrades project was a Signalling and Telecommunications led project with significant civil, structural and permanent way elements included in the scope of works. This single-track line situated on the Belfast – Derry~Londonderry route currently has 38 train movements through the level crossings each day. Therefore, outside of the main 10-day blockade, works were programmed and completed under non disruptive possessions.
The Translink Cullybackey Level Crossing Renewals project comprised four main elements:
- Upgrade three level crossings (Cullybackey Station, Cullybackey North and Cullybackey South).
- Signals and all associated civil, structural and S&T infrastructure from Ballymena Relay Room to MP 39.
- New ducted cable route from Ballymena Relay Room to MP39.
- Platform Extension and redesign of Station Entrance at Cullybackey.
All three level crossings suffered from severe dry wire degradation and were coming to the end of their operational life after 30 years of service. This represented a significant risk to Translink’s operations, and required urgent renewal. This was a key driver for the project and the significant investment in the area. Translink and its project partners also supported a number of local businesses and community groups over the course of the project.
