About the project

ChandlerKBS was appointed by Welsh Government to lead the development and delivery of a programme of railway station improvements on the Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil line. Awarded ‘Transportation Project of the Year’ by the CIHT in Wales, concept designs were prepared for all 16 stations in the programme, with implementation prioritized for half, in line with budget constraints.

Package 1 focused on the stations at Treforest Estate, Abercynon, Merthyr Vale, Troedyrhiw, Pentrebach and Merthyr Tydfil. The works included: improved Active Travel facilities; improvements for DDA compliance; improvements to safety and security; enhanced waiting rooms / additional shelters; interchange facilities with bus service; platform widening and renewed platform furniture.

Package 2 included higher value works at Radyr and Llandaf stations. Improvements works included new state-of-the-art ticket offices and car park remodelling. A new Park & Ride facility was created at Radyr Station which allows for an additional 180 parking spaces. Package 2 also featured a trial of the Metro branding and placemaking design principles that have subsequently been taken forward and developed by Transport for Wales.
